Vitiligo sufferers often have sluggish thyroids, which leads to sluggish metabolisms, which leads to sluggish digestion. Breaking down proteins is often a problem for those with vitiligo.  A live, health promoting diet includes protein rich, gluten-free grains, a large variety of fresh, local, in season vegetables, herbs and spices, as well as healthful raw walnuts, chia seeds, hemp hearts, sunflower seeds and other nutrient dense foods, such as kelp noodles and other sea vegetables. These foods are scientifically shown to lower inflammation and to reverse autoimmune responses. Vegetables are easier to digest and contain protein, in additon to vitamins, minerals, enzymes, phytonutrients, chlorophyll and other life sustaining components that promote health and lower inflammation.

Meat and animal milk, on the other hand, are extremely difficult to digest and significantly up the levels of inflammation and negative immune responses that cause and spread diseases, including vitiligo. We are not baby cows, so why drink their milk when there are so many plant and nut based choices that improve and compliment health? Calves weigh 60 pounds at birth, and 600 pounds at 6 months of age. Humans cannot process the proteins, calories and fat of cow's milk, (liquid meat), that is made specifically for the offspring of cows! Most humans never reach 600 pounds! They would likely die before their weight reached that point! So why overburden the bellies of children, teens and adults with cow's milk when we were not made for these foods?

Since animals in the wild stop drinking liquid meat, or milk, from their parents after infancy, so should humans. Vegetables contain easily digestible calcium, protein and fats that improve our digestion. All diseases begin in the stomach, with digestion! Simply by switching to a plant-based diet, or mostly plant-based diet that includes a variety of live foods, grown in organic soils, helps to reverse autoimmune responses and other unhealthful reactions that are brought on by the inability to break down and digest certain proteins, fats and acid producing food items.

I provide detailed instructions on eating healthfully, exercising and other methods of ensuring success in reversing vitiligo naturally in my book, Wanakee's Nutritional Approach to Vitiligo & Other Autoimmune Diseases.

A diet rich in raw, fermented foods, filled with live enzymes and nutrients, helps to improve digestion and nutrient absorption, as well as a healthy body and mind. Choose healthful foods that promote life and a vitiligo-free body.

I encourage clients to make healthful lifestyle choices as part of their vitiligo regimen. Vitiligo, passionately sharing my life's work and my personal trials and triumphs!

I spoke with a new client recently. He was looking for answers. I started telling him my story, and how I would not accept the prognosis that there was nothing I could do to reverse the vitiligo that was slowly spreading and the vitiligo that doctors predicted would overtake my entire body by the time I was 30.

At 17, this is not what I wanted to hear. I had noticed these white spots for as long as I could remember. I did not like them. I especially dislked them once they started to multiply.

When I left that team of doctors who dealt me such a harsh blow, I made up my mind that I would do something. I would find a way to stop this vitiligo from spreading. I would find a way to regain my pigmentation so that I would not lose all of my skin color by the time I was 30!

Lucky for me, my mom ordered every natural healing book and magazine that she could find. I read them all and every now and then, I would find the word vitiligo in one of those books. I would learn about various nutrients that a doctor in California was using to help people regain their natural color.

I learned how people who, like me, had been warned to avoid the sun. And how this one woman who liked to sunbathe used nutrients on her skin as a natural sunblock that ended up bringing her skin color back, when combined with sunlight.

I've encountered thousands of people with vitiligo through my business and on social media. There is one recurring thing among those of us who fight to regain our color and do it with zest and succcess! It's optimism. We believe we can do it and we make it happen!

Unfortunately, I've also encountered those who naysay any and everything that gives hope to those with vitiligo.

As a person who had vitiligo as long as I can remember, I can say with confidence, if you have a will to regain your pigmentation, there is a way!
