The Truth About Vitiligo

,Vitiligo is an autoimmune skin disease. It is not a blessing. It is not a curse. Vitiligo is not a genetic variation. Vitiligo is not a skin disorder. Vitiligo is a bonfire autoimmune disease, whereby the immune system attacks melanin, or pigment. Inflammation drives autoimmune attacks.
Denying science harms people. When you understand what is going on, you are empowered. Education allows vitiligo sufferers to make their own intelligent choices.
As a child, I yearned to know what was wrong with my skin. There were no answers that satisfied me. 'There's nothing you can do' was unacceptable. I wanted facts. I wanted science.
Truth is, vitiligo is not a disease that science cares enough about. It affects a relatively small part of the population. There's not enough money in vitiligo to warrant adequate and aggressive research. That didn't stop me from doing my own research. Autumn is near! Fall into good skin care practices.

 We are less than 3 weeks from Autumn, when the leaves fall and the air dries. Special attention to skin is important this time of year. Our body butters, cream and oil are all designed to moisturize and heal traumatized skin, be it vitiligo, eczema, psoriasis, allergic reactions, scar tissue, burns or color loss due to trauma. It is important to leave your skin moist when you shower. Use the cream/oil/butters on moist skin whenever possible. It helps with absorption and it helps to reach the inner layers of skin. Have patience. Most clients start seeing progress within two to six weeks; however, in difficult to pigment areas, or for those who do not follow the regimen, it can take longer to see progress. Healing is a process. You are using a healing regimen, not a coloring agent or skin dye. Skin cells are the size of pin dots, so you may see freckling, pinking, reddening, shadowing and/or a combination of these things in various areas.

Essential Aromatic Care For Your Skin - Therapeutic Home Spa Therapy




I spend a lot of time working with essential oils. Everything I use on my skin is intentional and deliberate. Nothing is left to chance. I don't fill my products with fillers. Even the carrier oils serve a positive purpose in healing, nourishing and hydrating the skin.

Today, I took a warm soaking bath with my recent aches and pains in mind, in addition to the preventive therapy that I use on my skin. The essential oils that I added to my bath were therapeutic in many ways - reducing inflammation, reducing soreness from exercising, removing tension and stress and nurturing my skin to prevent and discourage vitiligo spots.

I got out of the bath rejuvenated, energetic and optimistic. Essential oils are very powerful healers. The 30 essential oils, nutrients, herbals and flower essences used in the vitiligo oil and cream are essential to many aspects of healing.

These creams and oils are also therapeutic to balancing hormones. I encourage clients to leave their bodies moist before applying the cream and oil after bathing. One thing I also do with the leftover oils and creams left on my hands after rubbing my entire body is to gently massage my throat area, especially in the thyroid area. Taking care of my skin is important to my overall health in addition to protecting my skin from disease, wrinkles, blemished, blotches and infections. I realize that everything rubbed onto my skin absorbs into my bloodstream. So, I use the same quality ingredients on my skin that I would eat.

Vitiligo - the key to regaining color.



Regaining skin color is as individual as we are. My approach to healing is holistic, whether it was regaining my skin color or fighting any illness. When I get sick or gain weight or feel sluggish, I look within. My body is its own healer. It s a complex machine that can and should keep me healthy. When there is a breakdown in my health, I know my body, the complex machine, is out of synch. 
When I hear people say, there's nothing you can do, I feel so bad for them. I realize a string of brilliant-minded medical professionals have taken away their hope. They often accept this fate without looking inward. 
Hippocrates said, " let food be thy medicine." Not steroid creams, massive sunblock or expensive UVB blocking clothing. Food. Fresh vegetables, ripe fruit, bountiful seeds and nuts in addition to herbs, spices, flowers, sunshine and pure, mineral rich oils. These are the healing medicines that Hippocrates spoke of so eloquently. Our complex engines run on fuel generated through whole, complex carbohydrates and pure mineral rich waters. Adequate sleep is essential to a healthful body. 
When it comes to healing the skin, I apply the same principles. Nourishing my skin from the outside requires the same healthful food based medicines that I eat to maintain my complex machine. Dermatologists have wrongfully admonished people with vitiligo to avoid the sun since I was a child. And long before that. Like all living things, the sun is our life source. We need sufficient sunlight to thrive, grow and be healthy. We need sunlight to stimulate pigment and to synthesize vitamin D. Sunshine is Nature's healer.

 I hope everyone is having a great summer thus far. I'm a Traditional Naturopath who had vitiligo from very early childhood through adulthood. I began researching the disease as a teen and learned to correct imbalances in my body with nature based foods, herbals, oils and other naturally healthful lifestyle choices. My research in a support group in the '90s gave me some valuable information on the fact that people with vitiligo are unique and the disease responds differently in every person. I also educated people with vitiligo on the importance of understanding that vitiligo is not a cosmetic disorder. Vitiligo is an autoimmune/genetic disease that coincides with other autoimmune diseases, dysfunctions and imbalances. In recognizing those who are comfortable in their own skin, I encourage all people with vitiligo to listen to your body. We tend to have a lot of imbalances that may not necessarily show up in standard medical tests, or that many practitioners may ignore. if something feels 'off,' don't allow anyone to convince you that you're okay. You know your body better than anyone. Listen to it carefully, for it is the most sophisticated machine that will alert you to dysfunction through sickness, skin problems, hair loss, sluggishness, indigestion, itching, mental fog and other signs. Always know that our bodies are very good at saying, Hey! I'm not okay right now! Please, take care of me, for I'm the only body you will ever get.

Myth: My doctor says I should avoid the sun.
Response:  Sunshine is good for your general health and good for your vitiligo. Avoiding the sun robs you of life sustaining properties needed to sustain life and health. Studies show that people with vitiligo are at no higher risk of cancers than the general population. Further, vitiligo skin is protected from deadly melanoma, because the melanocytes are not producing melanin. Melanin is necessary to produce melanoma. The dangers of using sunblocks, as opposed to sunscreens is, you’re at higher risk of certain cancers, your skin is not able to make vitamin D3, you lose the benefit of mood enhancing endorphins and you’re encouraging your skin to lighten when avoiding the sun. Those UV blocking clothing are equally dangerous and useless. If you burn easily, wear a hat and cover up with light colored clothing that filter, not block the sun.
Myth: People with vitiligo should avoid citrus, apple cider vinegar and fermented foods.
Response: People with vitiligo need citrus, apple cider vinegar and other fermented foods to help aid sluggish digestion and to encourage healthy stomach acid levels.
Myth: Spicy foods worsen vitiligo.
Response: Spicy foods like peppers actually encourage circulation and blood flow, which benefits people with vitiligo. Spices are nature’s medications. They actually serve several healing purposes, including ensuring oxygen, nutrients and red blood cells getting to those dormant melanocytes to help stimulate pigmentation.
Myth: Vitiligo cells, or melanocytes, are dead.
Response: Melanocytes in those with vitiligo are not dead. The cells are dormant.
Myth: Protopic, Elidel, steroid creams and other immune-suppresant drugs “cure” vitiligo.
Reponse: Immune suppressing drugs are like dams that keep water from flowing. These drugs suppress the immune system so that it does not work at all, which may provide temporary relief in the form of regaining color; however, most of my clients who have tried immune suppressing drugs tend to have far more vitiligo that those who have not suppressed their immune responses. On the other hand, clients who have not used immune suppressing drugs tend to regain pigment easier and they tend to retain the color gained, when following the lifestyle changes and vitiligo regimen.

There are some very important lessons to learn when it comes to healing.  People who successfully heal tend to have certain qualities, like reading and following instructions. If you have more than a few questions about any given disease and the leading expert in the field has written a book, take the time and resources to buy the book and actually read it. Keep it as a reference for any questions or issues that may come up in the future.

Successful people actually follow the regimen. They adhere to the suggested per day usage of therapies; they get outside for healing sun and mild exercise; they drink sufficient water daily; they juice and/or make healthful smoothies; and they eat to live, as opposed to living to eat.
Live foods promote life. Fresh, raw, local, in season plant-based foods sustain life. Make your local farmers; market your pharmacy. 
 The most important attribute of clients who successfully heal is perseverance. They stick with it. They use products as directed. They make the necessary lifestyle changes. They get results!
Many clients don't get sunlight, either because they are working during the day, or they believe the myth that people with vitiligo should avoid the sun. Most unfortunate, because sunlight is essential to health and life. If plants do not get sufficient sunlight stimulation, they die. The same with humans. The sun powers our health. The sun is necessary for us to make our own vitamin D via the skin. We cannot be healthy without sunlight. Synthetic light therapy does not provide the full healing powers of natural sunlight's healing rays. We suggest at least 30 minutes per day of healing sun. If you burn easily, cover up with lightweight, light colored clothing and hats. Using UVB blocking creams, oils and clothing is dangerous to your health! We are not vampires. We are not allergic to the sun! It's a myth that far too many medical doctors continue to perpetuate. 
For those who are not getting sufficient sun to stimulate pigmentation and cannot afford UVB therapy or laser therapy should consider joining a gym like Planet Fitness. For a $20 a month fee, two people can go to the gym, and more importantly, one can use the red light therapy, which helps to heal and repair skin. The red light therapy also helps to lift the mood and to retard the aging process. There is no substitute for natural sunlight; however, you can subsidize sun therapy with alternative light therapies.
For clients who struggle with degenerative or autoimmune diseases, getting rid of milk and other animal products is highly suggested. Opt instead for gluten-free whole grains and seeds that are packed with proteins and nutrients, as well as high protein plants such as avacado and hemp. If you replace foods from cans, bags, boxes and plastics with fresh fruits, vegetables, raw seeds and nuts, your body will heal and repair itself. It will cast off weight faster and it will reverse aging and illnesses that medical doctors claim are impossible to improbable to reverse. 
Commit to healing. Take charge of your health issues. Juice live produce, make smoothies with hemp powder and spirulina instead of whey, take a walk in the healing sun daily, even if the skies are overcast or cloudy, laugh out loud and love with all the passion you can muster.

Avoid antacids, especially if you have acid reflux. Acid reflux is often a sign of low hydrochloric acid in the stomach.
